Portraits of Refugees

Between 2007 and 2009, Wim Lamboo photographed refugees in Leiden, the Netherlands, with or without a staying permit. The people are portrayed in their daily environment in and around the city with their favourite objects, with pieces of the material culture from their origins. Lamboo met families, children, adolescents and single people. They showed photographs, flags, toys from their childhood, traditional costumes and musical instruments.

The work was published in the book World Tour in Leiden. Portraits of Refugees (Wereldreis in Leiden. Portretten van Vluchtelingen), SOMA Publisher, Meerkerk, the Netherlands, 2009 (ISBN 978 90 70 36074 0).

The publication was part of the photo exhibition held from May 30 2009 until January 4 2010 in the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, the Netherlands.
